Virtual Reality Technology Helps Engineering Drawing Teaching Course - Dr. Lu Jianxun

2021-01-22

The course of engineering drawing is a basic course. The traditional teaching mainly uses ruler, compass and drawing board as tools to carry out manual drawing. The teaching focus is mainly on the drawing method of plane projection, drawing of two-dimensional engineering drawing and reading ability. As an introductory course reflecting the characteristics of engineering, it has a history of many years and is also one of the basic professional courses that engineering students must learn. Two-dimensional engineering drawing is an essential technical document in production and a universal "language of engineering technology" in the world. Correct and standardized drawing and reading of two-dimensional engineering drawings is an essential basic quality for an engineering technician. In recent years, with the development of computer-aided design (CAD), 3D drawing software such as (UG, Pro/E, Solidworks, etc.) for engineering drawing production has also been introduced into classroom teaching, different from the traditional drawing method is in the computer software to complete the 3D model, and then converted to two-dimensional engineering drawing and drawing. Computer graphics plays an important role in cultivating students' spatial imagination and conceiving ability based on creative thinking and promoting industrialization process.

However, in the process of teaching, the project applicants also found such a situation, that is, no matter how dedicated the teachers are to the combination of teaching, no matter how hard the students study and practice, some of them still can not pass this pass (highlighted in the ability of reading pictures). Why? The crux of the problem is that the students' imagination is poor, they have not established the concept of space, and they cannot correctly complete the transformation from space to plane and then from plane to space. The fundamental reason is that the teaching method is single, the teaching method is not intuitive, and can not improve the spatial imagination and creativity of students. At the same time, as the country promotes innovation-driven development and implements major strategies such as "One Belt And One Road", "Made in China 2025" and "Internet +", the new economy represented by new technologies, new business forms, new models and new industries is booming, which puts forward higher and updated requirements for the cultivation of scientific and technological innovative talents in China. Therefore, it is urgent to reform and innovate the traditional teaching methods and methods of engineering drawing.

Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of 3D graphics technology, multimedia sensing interaction technology and high resolution display technology, to generate a realistic 3D Virtual Reality environment; Users can wear a special helmet and a special data glove and so on sensing device, or use of the mouse, keyboard and other input devices, after entering the virtual space, become a member of the virtual environment, immersed in the virtual environment, the real-time interaction, awareness and operating a variety of different objects in the virtual environment, in order to gain immersive feel and experience. Virtual reality technology includes computer graphics processing technology, artificial intelligence technology, sensor technology, multimedia technology and other latest research results, its man-machine interaction operating environment and real-time three-dimensional space expression can make people immersive; With the popularization of the Internet, virtual reality technology is gradually becoming one of the main means of modern product development. At present, in the research field of virtual reality + motion-sensing interaction technology at home and abroad, the typical representative virtual assembly systems include the VADE system of Washington State University, the VASS virtual assembly training system of Tsinghua University, and the VD-VAS system of Zhejiang University. These systems mainly use virtual reality, augmented reality, virtual-real fusion and other technologies, which have high efficiency and strong immersion in human-computer interaction.

It is of great practical significance to combine Virtual Reality technology with engineering drawing course. Students can import their own products (no matter how complex the structure is) into the software of virtual reality technology. Students can observe the design effect of 3D products from any Angle. If the assembly position of the parts interferes or the internal structure of the assembly is not clear and the expression is not clear, students can observe and modify it easily. On the one hand, it can improve students' spatial thinking ability and design and creation ability, so that learning is no longer boring and boring, and achieve teaching effect. On the other hand, it can meet the application needs of enterprises, so that students can fully participate in the design of products, ensure the accuracy and efficiency of product design, and greatly reduce the loss caused by communication barriers.

With the introduction of 5G technology into the campus, the novel and unique virtual reality technology will certainly bring new impetus and new challenges to the traditional teaching of engineering courses, and will also become a valuable method to cultivate engineering talents with international vision and craftsman spirit.
