Application of AR technology in the field of architecture - Dr. Qingpu Li

Informationization has given rise to many new technologies, such as VR and AR, which have changed our work and study habits and improved the quality of life. The same is true in the construction industry. Augmented Reality, or AR, is the technology that calculates the position and Angle of a camera image in real time and adds the corresponding image. The goal is to overlay the virtual world on the screen and interact with the real world. It is a technology that increases the user's perception of the real world through the information provided by the computer system, applies the virtual information to the real world, and superimposes the computer-generated virtual object, scene or system prompt information on the real scene, so as to realize the enhancement of reality. Augmented reality usually comes in the form of a combination of a pass-through helmet display system and a registration system (the location of user observation points and computer-generated virtual objects in an AR system).

The application of AR augmented reality technology in the construction industry is not common, mainly because the construction industry is generally large engineering projects, the level of AR technology requirements are relatively high, so it is generally difficult to complete the whole project or successfully complete the customer requirements of the scene. At present, except for the everywhere placement of AR smart home and the 3D effect display of housing type, the application of AR technology in the construction industry is also rare. However, research data, the construction industry for the prospect of AR technology, and the development of future applications, still have great hope.

I. Application in project planning

The construction team must have a thorough understanding of the building and construction process. They must also consider social and environmental impacts. These are critical for planning and obtaining relevant permits. The details involved in project planning are enormous. Ideally, anyone looking at the plan should have a good idea of the final output. You have to satisfy the customer that you have captured every detail according to their needs. Previously, you had to rely on imagination and good design sketches. You need to capture everything so that everyone is on the same page. If there are any changes or errors, have to go back to the drawing board. But now, AR allows for a realistic presentation of the layout. Imagine the cost of having to modify the structure once it has been set up. Money and time are lost, which can affect a business's bottom line. With AR, you can modify the virtual model. Make these changes before implementing them on the actual building. It can also be a magical aid when it comes to decorating. The team can make changes on the virtual building first. Any errors can be identified and fixed before changes are made to existing structures.

Second, the application in architectural design

Traditional architectural design usually adopts the method of transformation from two-dimensional graphics to three-dimensional thinking. Because two-dimensional drawings or three-dimensional models only reflect part of the building information, and designers lack comprehensive thinking on the design object, narrow vision and lack of integrated thinking ability, some design defects are often covered up. Augmented reality (AR) in architecture design, can make the architect's creation through augmented reality in the process of the real object position attitude tracking technology and the actual fusion technology, the architectural design of 3 d model registration in the real world, and with the real buildings surrounding environment fusion, effectively avoid on surrounding environment in the process of architectural design modeling, At the same time, ensure the authenticity of the surrounding environment in the design result, which is conducive to the designer to make a more reasonable evaluation of the architectural design scheme. Using AR technology for interior design, designers can construct a virtual building model like building blocks and then observe it from different angles. In the process of model construction, materials can be quickly obtained from the network, and then the model attributes can be assigned values to reproduce the structure and scale of the actual building. The immersive effects of AR technology enable designers to view the building structure from the inside and interact dynamically with architectural elements to refine the design details of the building's interior. For example, designers can adjust the texture pattern and color of interior decorations at any time, and judge whether the desired effect can be achieved under a specific light effect.

Three, the application of construction management

Because AR can be loaded at the construction site of virtual construction content, make the field personnel data extraction from complanation that need higher professional activity, can be in the site construction management to reduce misunderstanding because of the construction organization and drawings, and information transmission distortion caused by huge losses, reduce the time of the builder's repeated read figure knowledge chart, Assist the management of construction personnel, strengthen the training of site construction personnel and even stress the construction of important nodes by loading obvious marking information, which is conducive to site safety management. Because AR provides real-time feedback, project team members can access it no matter where they are. The ability to work remotely contributes to productivity. Remote team members can view photos or videos and make decisions. AR can provide support to field service engineers. Most of the time, they have to go to the field and do the work. However, AR can realize remote monitoring and maintenance. A company can handle many projects without incurring the expense of traveling each time.

Fourth, the application of architectural teaching activities and construction safety training.

At present, the application of augmented reality technology in the field of teaching has been preliminary exploration and case study. Under the existing teaching conditions, students majoring in construction engineering usually only rely on traditional teaching methods and cannot participate in and interact with the real site. If 3D images of construction equipment are superimposed on two-dimensional markers of AR through AR technology, students can observe construction machinery from various angles only by scanning these markers with computers and specific equipment. By superimposing the video signals of real dynamic construction process on AR markers, students can understand and learn the construction technology from multiple perspectives, and facilitate communication and understanding among students.

Safety is one of the biggest concerns on any construction site, and reputable companies spend a lot of time training workers. They have to learn how to navigate around construction sites and equipment. They also learn to handle machinery safely and many other things. While critical, training can be time-consuming and costly. Companies have to find areas to simulate different scenarios that might take place on site. Artificial intelligence allows simulation of devices, tools, and different scenarios. Companies can provide a safe learning environment. Even when trainees make mistakes, they do so in a virtual world. You don't have to worry about someone getting hurt or paying for broken equipment.

AR technology is not mature at present, this paper only describes the application of AR technology in the field of architecture from four aspects, such as project planning and architectural design. With the development of AR technology, its application in the field of architecture will be more and more extensive.
